Humor , laughter, amusement; just a few reactions from those who are entertained by comedians. They tend to be in our daily lives and the humorists that create them have to be careful with the messages they put across. Although some refer to a humorist as being offensive and having no place in society, in reality these comedian are significantly valuable due to their way of bringing out society's ideals in a creative way.
Since some individuals debate the purpose that humorists hold within society, in actuality, they are vital role when informing the general public on major issues. With Ted Talks, professors and specialists discuss topics in which they are greatly knowledgeable on while incorporating humor. In return, the audience is actively paying attention solely on the speaker, thus learning more about society's issues and problems. Audience's need interesting ways to bring about information the general public may not be completely educated on. Through Thomas Nast's creation of political cartoons, he exposed Boss Tweed stealing money from New York City to the public, in order to bring justice and restore order for the citizens. In doing this, Tweed recieved jail time and the city was able to correctly function again. In serving society in a way that accurately and humorously demonstrated that issue Nast was able to bring beneficial change to the city, reinforcing de Botton's claim that humorists are vital to society.
While many believe that a humorists goal is to merely get a laugh, in reality, they serve as comedic relief from everyday anxieties. They take people's mind off of what they worry about; problems at work, issues within the family,or the amount of school work that needs to be completed. Comedies, such as the Hangover series, have no underlying meaning that needs to be analyzed, but rather a hilarious plot that some may relate to. The watcher will not only laugh at the movie but will feel the weight lift from their shoulders for they are not focused on their worries. Stand-up comedians are similar in the way that they relieve stress. Gabriel Iglesias, who's famous quote is "I'm not fat, I'm fluffy," makes jokes about his weight and eating habits. With these jokes, he pinpoints the weight conscious individuals in society and tries to make them worry not so much about their weight but to rather embrace their body. Iglesias exemplifies how a larger individual can lead a successful life doing what he or she loves and encourages these individuals to chase their dreams even while being overweight. The Hangover series and Iglesias serve a vital role by creating stupidly funny comedies that ease the tensions off individuals allowing them to contribute to society effectively, thus defending de Botton's claim.
Without humorists, our society would be way to serious and depressed to function. People would be stressed out, uptight, and uninformed; there would not be any creative, intriguing, funny entertainment that would interest anyone. Our communities would not know the effects a good laugh can have on a person's psyche.
